The Mercy of God

The mercy of God is one of the greatest and most accurate attributes defining the relationship of the Divine One to humanity. It inspires us to be merciful to one another and characterizes our ministries.

The word "mercy" occurs repeatedly in Sacred Scripture and is used frequently in our prayers and worship. Mercy embodies the notions of unconditional love, understanding, acceptance, caring, kindness, compassion, and forgiveness.

Typical Bible passages are: "God is merciful and forgiving" (Leviticus 26:42) and "Divine Mercy is never ending and we always shall be God's beloved people" (Jeremiah 7:23).

The redemption of the human race by Jesus Christ is supreme proof of the mercy of God. Images of Jesus as the Good Shepherd further reflect the notion of His mercy. It is especially in our weakness that we can appreciate and benefit from God's mercy.

Consider the countless persons toward whom God's mercy is manifested. Some well-known examples are: Peter, who denied Jesus but was forgiven and remained the chief apostle; Dismas, the "good thief," to whom Jesus promised heaven; the adulterous woman who was liberated and forgiven by Jesus, and Thomas, who doubted the Resurrection, but who remained loved by Jesus.

Just as God is merciful toward us, we likewise must show mercy to ourselves and to our fellow humans. The parable of the prodigal son is a good example of God's mercy being extended.

The mercy of God, the very name of our community, inspires our lives and good works.
