The Power of Prayer

In our relationship with God, we can maintain a conversation which we generally refer to as "prayer." Jesus promised "Where two or three come together in my name, I am there with them" (Matthew 18:20) and "I will not turn away anyone who comes to me" (John 6:35-40).

Jesus himself, by both word and example, taught us how to pray. He, the apostles and disciples, and the early Christians prayed fervently and frequently. Members of the Mercy of God Community pause for prayer three times a day.

Prayer invokes God's saving presence in our lives. Shared prayer, by which we express one another's praise and thanks to God, and submit our respective needs and petitions, exemplifies the Church as what Br. Roger of Taize calls a "unique communion."

We know that God answers prayer because Jesus said "Ask and you will receive; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you" (Luke 11:5-9). Henri Nouwen said "Concrete requests are merely ways of saying that we trust in the fullness of God's goodness; whenever we pray with hope, we put our lives in the hands of God."
