FOR WORLD PEACE ... for the withdrawal of the accelerating Israeli
offensive, an end of the conflict between the Hamas
and Fatah factions in the Gaza
Strip, and the attacks against Israel; that
there be a process to establish a homeland
for Palestine, and for an offset of the rapid
decrease of the Christian population in
the Holy Land (from more than half a million
in 2003 to less than 20,000 now), causing
concern for the future survival of the Church
in the war-torn Middle East region*; that terrorist attacks in India cease; for rational
resolutions of the wars in Iraq** and Afghanistan***; an end to the worsening situation of genocide
in Darfur; that there be peace and stability
in Pakistan; that hostilities between Russia
and Georgia be permanently ended; for peace
throughout the world; divine protection
of our military men and women as they risk
their lives and perform selfless acts in
the pursuit of peace, and for their loved
ones who sacrifice and suffer losses; the
hundreds of innocent people injured in terrorist
attacks; for a radical change in U.S.
foreign policy, especially in Latin America;
that all efforts to end terrorism be
sustained, and that peace be pursued by prayer and diplomatic
means.
NOTES: * Christian leaders and congregants of the
Catholic, Evangelical, Orthodox, Protestant
and African American church traditions
in the USA, as Churches for Middle East Peace, have joined together to declare their
support for robust U.S. peacemaking efforts
and to call for meaningful progress to achieve
a just and lasting two-state peace in that
region. For further information, please click:

** March 19, 2009, was the 6th anniversary of the invasion of Iraq . It was a day of mourning, repentance, and action. The war and the occupation go on, soldiers and
civilians are still dying, and Iraq still waits to rebuild in earnest.

*** It has been eight years since the United
States military began operations in Afghanistan
in response to the 9/11 terrorist attacks.
We lament the suffering, violence, and death
on both sides of the conflict. Our scriptures
and history teach us that war is not the
answer to building the peace and security
we are striving for in this world. Unfortunately, the options being debated
are far too narrow and are unlikely to bring
the peace and stability we desperately
need to end this war. The two strategies
in the forefront - counterinsurgency, requiring a substantial escalation of troops,
and counterterrorism, relying on precision targeting technology
to apply military pressure on the most dangerous
operatives, often at the expense of civilian
lives - don't address the deep moral and
practical issues we face in Afghanistan .
We await President Obama's speech to the
nation, scheduled for December 1, when he
is to announce his strategy for Afghanistan.
It's not too late to join other people of faith in praying for him and urging him to begin with bold humanitarian aid and
development instead of more military escalation.
